First Festival: 2004

Mission: to promote reading, heighten awareness of literacy challenges, and showcase the rich culture of the written word in Michigan and beyond. Each year a diverse group of community leaders committed to literature, language, and the arts in Michigan plans the Festival. While the festival is located in Ann Arbor, it is regional in its scope and interest. Read more about our mission and focus here.

Festival components: each Festival is comprised of 3 components:

(1) Street Fair: browse the exhibitor tables to see a diverse sampling of authors, (book) artists, programs, and organizations who are passionate about the value of books, writing, and reading in our lives and society;

(2) Moonlight Book Crawl: each night of the festival, join us in local restaurants, bars, bookstores, and shops to hear Michigan authors and poets read from their latest works;

and (3) Writer’s Conference: a full-day workshop series where attendees can hone their skills in sessions led by a noted group of writers and instructors from Michigan and beyond. Held at the Hatcher Graduate Library.

LILA Award: Each year, the AABF announces the recipient of the Leader in the Literary Arts (LILA) Award. The LILA is bestowed upon those individuals and organizations that significantly contribute to making Ann Arbor a place where the literary arts are nurtured, prized, respected, and thrive.
