2013 Writer’ Conference

The Ann Arbor Book Festival is pleased to bring another dynamic Writer’s Conference to the community. This will be a full-day experience where attendees can hone their skills in sessions led by a noted group of writers and instructors. These teachers have very impressive resumes and are excited to bring you their expertise and share their passion for writing.

The Ann Arbor Book Festival is proud to welcome poet and National Book Award finalist Patricia Smith and her husband, Edgar Award winning mystery writer Bruce DeSilva for a keynote address. Books will be available for sale courtesy of Crazy Wisdom Bookstore.

Following their presentation at 7PM in the UM Library Gallery (Room 100 Hatcher Graduate Library), LILA awards will be presented to Evans Young, longtime chair of the AABF board, and Aunt Agatha’s, Ann Arbor’s famous 4th Avenue mystery bookstore.

This year’s Writer’s Conference will take place on Saturday, June 22 in Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library on the University of Michigan’s Campus.

Comics, Collections and the Common Core: A Pre-Festival Workshop
In partnership with the incredible Kids Read Comics annual event at the Ann Arbor District Library, this pre-festival workshop has been designed for educators, librarians and comic artists and writers. Pre-registration is required.

Moonlight Book Crawl
The Moonlight Book Crawl is back! New Westside edition on Thursday, June 20, plus events in Downtown Ann Arbor on Friday, June 21 and Saturday, June 22.

Join us at 7 PM at the Quarter Bistro for the 2013 Ann Arbor Youth Poetry Slam Team, featuring live performances from Alex Kime, Aaliyah Jihad, Edith Zang, Amelia Deihl, Rachel Kerby and Rianna Johnson-Levy. Come watch this year’s awesome slam team as they get ready to compete at the National Youth Poetry Slam in Chicago.

Then head to Nicola’s Books at 8 PM for readings by poet Susan Hutton, Keith Taylor and friends.

Comics, Collections and the Common Core: Pre-Festival Workshop
(at Hatcher Graduate Library):
Educators, librarians and cartoonists, check it out! Librarians will get resources on how to build and maintain their collections; Educators will learn how to incorporate comics into their curriculum; and Cartoonists will learn new ways to work with these two groups to better advocate for their medium!

The evening begins at 6 PM at Literati: Red Beard Press Gala featuring superstar writers from Ann Arbor’s newest local publishing company including Angel Nafis, Gahl Liberzon, Aimee Le, Fiona Chamness, Carlina Duan and Haley Patail.

Continue the night at Bill’s Beer Garden at 7:30 PM, where Detroit sensation and nationally acclaimed poet jessica Care moore and Ann Arbor poet and Independent Publishers Best Short Fiction Gold Medalist Jeff Kass will perform.

Finally, don’t miss your chance for a sneak peak at the yet-to-be-opened Aventura, where 2013 Pushcart Prize-winning poet Scott Beal, University Michigan Poetry Slam Slammaster Alex Pan and others will read.
